Obituary of Martha Carter

CARTER--Martha Elizabeth Wiedersheim Lloyd, 90, a long time resident of New Canaan, CT and most recently of Meadow Ridge in Redding, CT died on February 7, 2012 after a brief illness. She was the beloved wife of 31 years of William Phelps Carter, who survives her. Her first husband, Charles Ewing Green Lloyd, predeceased her in 1979 after 34 years of marriage. Known as Betty, she grew up in St. Davids, PA, attended the Shipley School and graduated from Chatham Hall in 1939. She was an avid sportswoman and long time member of the Country Club of New Canaan and the Saugatuck Shores Club and served on their boards. She was also a member of the Mill Reef Club in Antigua. She is survived by her sister, Katherine Wiedersheim Petrie of Doylestown, PA and her two children, Suzanne Lloyd Liebolt and Charles Ewing Green Lloyd, Jr., both of New York City. She leaves behind four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren by her first husband and four Carter sons, twelve step grandchildren and two step-great- grandchildren by her second. All adored her. Betty reached across generations. She was energetic and vibrant and kept her keen mind engaged until the end. Her memory was legendary and she was our GPS. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, February 17, 2012 at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 111 Oenoke Ridge, New Canaan, CT 06840. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in her memory to St. Mark's.
