John G. Sholl III, M.D., 96 PEORIA, Ill. -- John G. Sholl III, M.D., 96, died on March 21, 2011, at Skylines Nursing Home in Peoria, Ill. Born on March 6, 1915, in Philadelphia, Pa., to John Gurney Sholl II and Helen Hare Sholl, he married Marjorie L. Hill on June 27, 1942, in Canton, Conn. She preceded him in death in 1999. Surviving are five children, John Douglas (Betsy) Sholl of Portland, Debora S. (David) Humphreys of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., Robert R. (Noreen) Sholl, M.D. of Scarborough, David G. Sholl (Bill Gilligan) of Boston, Mass., and Rebecca A. (Robert) Baer of Germantown Hills, Ill.; one sister-in-law, Janet Sholl of Cherry Hill, N.J., one brother, Calvin (Nancy) Sholl of Peterborough, N.H.; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Donald' and granddaughter, Carmen Sholl McDonald. 'Jack' graduated from Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pa., in 1937, and received his MD degree from Harvard Medical School. Jack was a captain and medic in the U.S. Army during World War II. Assigned to the 328th Medical Battalion, 103rd Infantry, Jack served the medical needs of the 409th Infantry Regiment and other combat units. He returned to his home in Cleveland, Ohio, and his private practice in internal medicine for 35 years where he also served as Associate Professor of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He was co-founder of the University Suburban Health Center on Green Road. Friends and patients alike often referred to him as 'a doc's doc,' a model and mentor for other physicians who admired his sharp diagnostic skills and warm, reassuring bedside manner. In the words of one colleague, 'a tower of good sense.' In 1979 Jack was recruited by the University of California at San Diego where he formed the La Jolla Internal Medicine Group at John G. Sholl III, M.D. UCSD (La Jolla, Calif.). He spent eight years there practicing internal medicine and serving as Professor of Medicine in the UCSD School of Medicine. Jack then retired from the practice of medicine in 1986, moving to Biddeford, where he spent another 18 years teaching physical diagnosis and clinical skills to medical students and residents through the Veterans Home in Scarborough. After living with his son Robert and his family for three years in Scarborough, Jack moved to Peoria, Ill., in 2008, to live with his daughter Rebecca and her family. Jack will long be remembered for his kindness, compassion, empathy, generosity, honesty, an unflagging patriotism, and the strange little shuffle of his feet as he delivered the punch line of his jokes. There was always a good-humored twinkle in his eyes. He took time to know you, whether patient or friend, and he maintained friendships as far back as nursery school! He was a highly respected clinician, teacher, friend, and father. In the words of his colleague Dr. Joe Foley, 'He was a well-read, literate, intelligently concerned human being.' Private services for Jack will be held in Saco. Burial will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery in Saco. Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington, Ill., is assisting the family with arrangements. Jack's memorial website is available at www.deitersfuneralhome.com where condolences may also be sent to the family.
