M. -Louise Miller, born in 1914, daughter of Theodore and Margaret-Williams, died on August 14, 2008 at 94 years old. Please consult the obituary here:
MILLER Dr. M. Louise Miller, age 94, of Ashlar Village in Wallingford, passed away on Thursday, August 14, 2008, at the Masonic Healthcare Center. Daughter of the late Theodore Carl and Margaret Williams Miller, she was born in Bridgeport, on March 16, 1914. Louise was a resident of Fairfield (Southport Section) for 85 years. She was predeceased by her brother, Carl T. Miller. She was Music Director and Organist of B'nai Israel Temple of Bridgeport. Louise was Minister of Music Emerita of the First Congregational Church, Stratford, where she was director of Music and Organist for 45 years. She was a faithful member of the First Church Congregational of Fairfield from childhood until late in her life and often played at organ recitals and at worship services. She was a charter member and former Dean and Honorary Life Member of the Bridgeport Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. The Chapter honored her by establishing the M. Louise Miller National Scholarship Fund for young Organists enrolled in American Universities. The Scholarship has awarded financial aid to many promising students. During her four decades as Director of Music and Organist at First Congregational Church, Stratford, Dr. Miller established in 1942 the Stratford Oratorio Society, a highly trained Choral group, which gave classical concerts with soloists yearly. The Society trained by Dr. Miller gave a thrilling performance of Mendelssohn's famous oratorio "Elijah", accompanied by the Greater Bridgeport Symphony Orchestra and conducted by Jonel Perlea, before a full audience at the Klein Memorial on February 18, 1956. During her musical leadership Louise, as she was affectionately known by all those who sang under her direction, worked diligently and was devoted to training young people in youth choirs. Her schooling included graduating from Roger Ludlowe High School in 1931; Yale University School of Music; Trinity College of Music, London; and the School of Sacred Music, Union Theological Seminary, New York City. Louise also received a Doctor of Humanities Degree (hon. Causa) from Bridgeport Engineering Institute. Dr. Miller was always in great demand as a guest organist, accompanist, and soloist, and as such joined the United Chorale of United Congregational Church of Bridgeport, then directed by her colleague, Dr. Paul Knox. In 1981 they toured England and Scotland performing concerts in several great Cathedrals. Louise was so honored and pleased to play the great organs at Coventry and Ely Cathedrals. She repeated this several years later by joining the United Chorale on a concert tour of Central Europe including famous Cathedrals in Vienna and Munich. Again, Louise made glorious music. She was a superb musician, a highly respected choral director; beloved by all those who sang under her direction and beloved not only by all those she trained but all who knew her and were fortunate enough to hear her perform. She is survived by her nieces, Judith Bonney of Yorktown, Virginia and Carol Jordan of Sault St. Marie, Ontario, Canada, and several grand nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, September 13, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at First Church Congregational, 148 Beach Road, Fairfield with the Rev. David Spollett, Pastor, officiating. Interment will be private in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Fairfield. Calling hours have been omitted. Arrangements are under the direction of the Spear-Miller Funeral Home, 39 South Benson Road, Fairfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church, 2301 Main St, Stratford, CT 06615, or First Church Congregational Fairfield, 148 Beach Rd., Fairfield, CT 06824 or to First Congregational Church, 23 South Main Street, Wallingford, CT 06492.
