Obituary of Lynda-Dickinson Smith


January 31, 2005 Lynda Dickinson Smith, 86, of Chapel Hill, NC, died of pneumonia on January 31, 2005, at the Carol Woods retirement community in Chapel Hill, NC. She was a summer resident at the Smith Camp of West Lake Road, Cazenovia. Mrs. Smith was born in New York City and was a direct descendant of John Dickinson, signer of the U.S. Constitution. She graduated as valedictorian from the Nightingale-Bamford School. She lived in Washington, DC, in the mid-1940s, in Bethesda and Chevy Chase, MD, from 1950 to 1969, and in Jamesville, NY, until moving to Chapel Hill in 1979. Mrs. Smith volunteered in the League of Women Voters, the American Red Cross's Gray Lady hospital program, and Meals on Wheels, and was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Bethesda. She was a member of the Cazenovia Club and the Cazenovia Golf Club for many years. She had three children from her marriage to Richard Linkroum, which later ended in divorce. In 1955 she married Fred Burton Smith, the general counsel of the U.S. Treasury Department during the Johnson administration. He had five children and daughter Meredith, child number nine, was born after they married. Mr. Smith died in 1998 after 43 years of marriage. Survivors include nine children, Martha L. Jordan of Sun City West, AZ; Susan L. Crowley of Washington, DC; Lynda L. Copper of Cazenovia, NY; Meredith S. Scott of Mt. Pleasant, IA; Jeanne W. Smith of Lincoln, VA; Susan S. Winkert of Cazenovia; Nancy S. Lazovik of DeKalb Junction, NY; F. Gordon Smith of Baltimore; and Cynthia W. Smith of Cambridge, MA; 16 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held this summer at the Smith Camp, where four generations of family continue to gather each year.
