Lucy Ann (Joyce) Sweeney, 86, of Acton and formerly of Boxborough, died peacefully Monday, Oct. 11, 2010 surrounded by her family. She was the beloved husband of Daniel J. Sweeney, who died in 2001. Born in Clinton and raised in Boxborough, she was the daughter of the late Frederick A. and Lucy B. (Droxler) Joyce. Following their marriage, the Sweeneys settled in Acton to raise their eight children. Mrs. Sweeney was a graduate of Fitchburg State Teachers College Class of 1946, where she was named the year's Queen of the Prom. She earned her master's degree from Bank Street College's Parsons School of Design in New York, and in 1963 was the only woman to be certified as an educator of industrial arts. A talented artist, Mrs. Sweeney taught art in the Hudson schools for 20 years before retiring. She was an excellent cook and baker, enjoyed entering the Pillsbury bake-off contests, and was known for her apple pies. She also loved music, gardening and the arts. Mrs. Sweeney was an active member of the Legion of Mary at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church in Acton for 15 years. She is survived by her children, Mary Clark of Maynard, Kathleen Colburn of Harvard, Sheila Belliveau of Leominster, Rose Nevala of Ashburnham, Eileen Eisner of Daytona Beach, Fla., Daniel P. Sweeney of Princeton, Maureen Gallant of Acton and Joyce Saliga of Hubbardston; two sisters, Claire Inferrerra of Concord and Joanie Joyce of Fitchburg; 20 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Frederick P. Joyce Sr., Francis Joyce, Constant "Joe" Joyce, Pauline Sariotis, and Bernard Joyce. Visiting hours are Thurs. Oct. 14 from 4-8 p.m. at the Acton Funeral Home, 470 Massachusetts Ave (Rte 111) Acton. The funeral Mass will be celebrated Fri. Oct. 15 at 11:30 a.m. in St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church, 89 Arlington St., Acton, with burial in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Central St., West Acton.
