SMITH Louise, age 91, was born on February 13, 1918 in Hawkinsville, Georgia and she resided in Rutherford, NJ. She peacefully entered her final resting place on Saturday, June 6, 2009 at St. Joseph's Hospital Wayne after a lengthy illness. Louise is a charter member of the Union Baptist Church in Passaic, New Jersey. She was baptized into membership at this church. On April 28, 1940 she joined into matrimony with John T. Smith. Together they shared 45 years of happiness. Louise always loved working with young people in both the church and community environments. At Union Baptist Church she was a past president of the Senior Usher Board and a past president of the Silverleaf Ushers Union of Northern New Jersey. Louise was a member of the Senior Missionary group, the Mothers' Board and served as the Lunch Coordinator and Bookkeeper of the Union Baptist Church Camp. In addition she was the chairperson of Personnel Department Guidance Guild Interracial Nursery School along with the Jewish Hadassah Women's Group of Passaic. Louise also served as Vice President and President of the Murray Hodge Post # 453 American Legion Auxiliary. On April 13, 1937 Louise joined Odessa Chapter No. 17. She held the offices of Secretary, Treasurer and Worthy Matron. From 1959 to 1986 Louise was elected Grand Treasurer of the Orient Grand Chapter. At the inception of Fulton Newark in 1978, she was appointed to the board. She worked with the youth department in the capacity of Treasurer and Mother Advisor in addition to being secretary to Craftsmen and Craftetts. Louise was also affiliated with all the upper houses within the Order of Eastern Star. She held various offices and received many awards and commendations for her years of service and participation. She was predeceased by her husband, John T, her sisters: Marie Mathis and Bernice Snell, her brother Alonza Brown and her nephew David R. Mathis. Survivors left to cherish her loving memory are: her daughter, Deborah; her sister-in-law, Lula Mae Brown, her godchildren: Gerald Washington, Geneva Jackson, Adorn Washington and Allen Colter; her niece Mitzie Mathis; special friends Carrie Walker and Lurline Glover along with a host of cousins and friends. Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate her life on Saturday, June 13, 2009, 9 AM at The Union Baptist Church 221 Myrtle Ave. Passaic, NJ.
