Louise Payne SmithFlorenceMrs. Louise Payne Smith, 91, originally from Decatur, passed away at her home in Florence on Wednesday, February 23, 2012. Mrs. Smith was born in Hartselle on September 6, 1920, and was a member of Central Baptist Church, Decatur. Survivors include her son, Thomas Russell (Gayle) Smith of Auburn; her daughter, Sylvia Payne Tucker and Don Ray Tucker of Florence; six grandchildren, Marisha (Roby) Robinson, Eron Russell (Mary) Smith, Renee (Jason) Moore, Sharon Tucker, Christi (Ronnie) Gilchrist and Leisa (Jason) English and nine great-grandchildren, Micaela Tucker, Caeley and Laney Moore, Joe, Ruby, and Leeona Gilchrist, Ella and Luke Robinson, Zoe Smith; her brother, John Howard Payne of Decatur; her sister-in-law, Beuna Swallows of Florence; and her brother-in-law, Tharol Smith of Mount Hope. She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, the late Russell T. Smith, and her parents, the late Lillie Mae Payne and John Wesley Payne of Hartselle. The funeral service will be held today, February 25, 2012, at 3:30 p.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home in Decatur. Burial will be in Decatur City Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the funeral home.Mrs. Smith never had a career outside the home, although with her organizational skills, discipline, and strong work ethic, she could have. Her chosen and God-centered task was to express love, encouragement, support and devotion to her husband, children, and extended family. Her legacy is being fulfilled in the life of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. It is a legacy of love and devotion that will last forever. The family wishes to express appreciation to the staff of Columbia Cottage in Florence and to the staff of Amedisys Hospice for their wonderful care of our family during this time.
