BARTOW -- Family roots kept Mrs. Louise P. Jackson in her native Bartow, where she taught middle school and raised money for the blind.Mrs. Jackson died of cancer Friday (July 28, 2006). She was 80.Born July 29, 1925, Mrs. Jackson lived her entire life in Bartow. The only occasion she found to leave was to attend Florida State University. She graduated in the school's first co-ed class in 1947."She found an attachment to the family legacy (in Bartow) and never wanted to leave," said her son, Adrian Jackson of Bartow.After returning she began teaching Spanish, English and history at Bartow Junior High School, where she would teach for the next 30 years."She had a unique way of listening to her children," her son said. "She made them feel like the center of the universe."Mrs. Jackson became a charter member of both the Bartow Lioness Club and Bartow Pilot Club, civic oriented organizations that raised money for charities. As president of both clubs, she focused the organizations' funds on helping the blind."She raised funds for guide dogs and organized a Christmas party for the blind," her son said. "She was very much a leader in (the Lioness Club's) program to aid the sightimpaired."Earlier this year Mrs. Jackson received a perfect attendance award from the Lioness Club for having never missed a monthly board meeting.Mrs. Jackson attended First United Methodist Church, Bartow, where she was a member of the Women's Club.Mrs. Jackson is survived by her husband of 59 years, James Jackson; son, Rear Admiral Adrian Jackson, Bartow; one granddaughter; and two great-grandchildren.Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at WhiddenMcLean Funeral Home, Bartow. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church, Bartow. Memorial contributions may be made to the Florida United Methodist Children's Home, P.O. Box 6299, Deltona, FL 32728; or Good Shepherd Hospice, 105 Arneson Ave., Auburndale, FL 33823.
