Mrs. Louise Bailey "Dodie" Carter, of Easley, formerly of Greenville, died suddenly Dec. 4, 2003. Mrs. Carter had been married for 50 years to L.W. "Nick" Carter, when he died in 1974. Mrs. Carter was born on Feb. 17, 1904, in Bakersville, N.C., and was descended from the Penland-Bailey family whose roots are in Mitchell County on property received from land grants in the 1840's. Mrs. Carter was well-known in the gardening circles in Greenville, where she maintained a shade garden at her home on McPherson Lane. Many local gardeners are recipients of her generous gifts of cuttings, plants and bulbs. She was a member of the Greenville Garden Club, who honored her as their oldest active member in the 1990's. She was a charter member of the Sara Crigler Garden Club, now known as the Carolina Foothills Garden Club, where she held several offices and was honored by the occasionally given Horticulture Award for excellence, by the Garden Club of America. Mrs. Carter was a past president of The Assembly, was a member of the Greenville Debutante Club, and for over 70 years was a devoted member of The First Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Carter is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Alex C. King (Ross), Mrs. David W. Inglis (Faith), both of Atlanta, Ga., and Mrs. J. Sheppard Mondy Jr. (Louise), of Richmond, Va.; as well as seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Carolina Foothills Garden Club Endowment Fund, P.O. Box 8472, Greenville, SC 29604; or to First Presbyterian Church of Greenville, SC, 200 W. Washington St., Greenville, SC 29601. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, at Harper's Chapel of First Presbyterian Church in Greenville. The Rev.
