Louise A. Smith, 75, passed away Monday, March 17, 2008, in Cox Medical Center South, following a lengthy illness. She passed peacefully from this world into the arms of her heavenly family. She was born April 7, 1932, in Springfield, Mo., to Charles M. Gammill and Elda (Jones) Gammill. Louise married Walter C. Smith on August 18, 1950, and they spend 16 years together until his death in 1966. She loved music, dancing, animals and taking care of her family. Although she raised seven children alone after her husband's death, it is a fitting tribute to her love and generosity of spirit that many called her mom and grandma. They never forgot her and many would call or stop by her home through the years to visit and ask for advice. She raised her family to take care of eachother and her children felt it was a privilege to care for her. Louise was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sister Shirley Hasley; brother Harold Gammill; step-mother Jewell Gammill; son Bobby Joe Smith; and best friend and loving step-father to her children, Willie Pratt. Left behind to honor her memory are her children, Terry Taylor (Clifford Watson), Patsy Bowers (Jim "Lobo" Culver), Sharon Sorrell (Dennis Sorrell), Carl Smith, Jenny "Weezie" Crossland (Bobby Jackson), Jerry Auricchio and James Smith; 22 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; a special niece, Raelena (Hasley) Jones (Matt Jones); and numerous other relatives. A big heartfelt thank you goes to Dr. Schudy and to the staff at Cox South 300W. Many thank yous for making her last days so comfortable. Everyone went above and beyond and showed great compassion. Well Mom, until we meet again, happy homecoming. Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today, March 19, in Greenlawn Funeral Home North. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 20, in the funeral home, with burial following in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
