WILLIAMS, Louis Allan, QC May 22, 1922 - February 28, 2011 After a long and fulfilling life, and some years of illness in his old age, Allan passed away at the age of 88 years. He will be dearly missed by his family and remembered by many for his service to his profession and his community. Allan was a man devoted to all that is good in family and society. He is survived by his beloved wife, Marjorie, who was his partner and strength for 62 years; his three children and their spouses, Louis (Elisabeth Burgess), Leslie (Shep Alexander) and Jane (Gary Brookes); his grandchildren John, Scott (Katja), Todd, Mark, Ashley, Jeremy, Ted, Sam and Amelia; and his great-granddaughter Virginia. Born in Glenavon, Saskatchewan and raised until age 17 in Assiniboia, Saskatchewan, Allan moved with his parents to Vancouver B.C. in 1936. He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1941 to 1945. Allan and Marjorie were married in 1948 and made their home in West Vancouver in 1949. For over 60 years, Allan's home was West Vancouver. Although he and Marjorie enjoyed their many travels throughout the world, he was always glad to return to the Gisby Street house they had built, or, in his later years, to the view of Ambleside from their apartment home. In 1950, Allan earned a law degree from the University of British Columbia and was called to the bar. In the five decades of his career, Allan combined a successful legal practice with an exceptional career in public service. In 1959, he was appointed to the West Vancouver Municipal Parks and Recreation Commission, a post he held for six years. He was elected as a West Vancouver Municipal Councillor in 1965. In 1966 he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia where he served for 17 years as the MLA for West Vancouver-Howe Sound. From 1975 to 1979, Allan served as Minister of Labour and Minister responsible for Native Affairs. In 1979, he was appointed Attorney General for the province and Queen's Counsel. He served as Attorney General until 1983 when he retired from provincial politics and returned to the practice of law at Davis & Company. As a mentor and advisor to members of the firm, Allan particularly enjoyed his role teaching legal ethics to a generation of young lawyers. At this time he also served as a director of BC Hydro & Power Authority, a Director of the Whistler Land Corporation, a founding member of the RCMP Public Complaints Commission and the BC member of the BC Claims Task Force. Allan's love for his community of West Vancouver drew him back to public office when, in 1993, he was again elected to West Vancouver Council. He served 3 terms until his retirement in 2002 at the age of 80. He dedicated his efforts to youth as he supported the construction of the new West Van aquatic centre, the new and upgraded community centers and sports fields. The family is tremendously thankful to the nursing and medical staff at Evergreen House, 1 South, at Lions Gate Hospital, and to Dr. Follows and Dr. Maher for their kind care of Allan in his final years. A private family gathering will honor Allan's life. To all who knew and admired him, we know Allan's desire would be for you to live your life fully in service to your family and community. In lieu of flowers or remembrances, please consider contributing to The Pacific Alzheimer Research Foundation, #210 - 1095 West Pender Street, Vancouver, B. C.
