Obituary of Lorraine Moore

MOORE Lorraine (Lo) Ida Hill Moore, 98, passed away on June 25, 2005 at St. Lukes Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida. Lorraine grew up in Antigo, Wisconsin, having been born there on October 20, 1906. Her parents were Ida Ruth (Chadok) and Warren Hill. She had one sister, Macasalyn, and one brother, Avery, both of whom preceded her in death. Following graduation from Antigo High School, Lorraine attended University of Wisconsin, University of Colorado, and University of Northern Iowa where she received her teaching degree. She taught in a one room school house in Laramie, Wyoming. Her means of transportation was horseback and her home was a covered sheep wagon. She continued to have fond memories of Wyoming and horses for the remainder of her life. She then moved to Elmhurst, Illinois, where she taught school for several years. Since the school system in 1937 required teachers to be unmarried, she quit teaching when she married John M. Moore in that year on June 12. Following their marriage, the couple moved to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, briefly returning to Elmhurst during World War II before settling in Ft. Lauderdale in 1950 for the remainder of their marriage. Their daughter was born and reared there. Her husband preceded her in death in 1967. Lo's activities were numerous and wide ranging. She was active in Park Temple Methodist church in Ft. Lauderdale where she was a Sunday School teacher and Circle leader. She enjoyed playing Bridge, Canasta, and reading throughout her 98 years. She was a volunteer at Broward General Hospital in Ft. Lauderdale, donating 4500 hours. She was a 50 year member of PEO, volunteer tutor, leader of a Camp Fire Girls troop, member of American Legion Auxilliary, and Order of Eastern Star. Also, Lo was a member of the DAR, tracing her ancestry to the 1500's England through Jonathan Avery and Colonial Governor John Marshall of Connecticut. Mrs. Moore is survived by her daughter, Jacqueline Lorraine Moore Goldman, St. Simons Island, Georgia, three grandchildren, Rodger Edmund Goldman, Tulsa, Oklahoma, Jill Lorraine Geehr, Jacksonville, Florida, Jamie Moore Sarkin, Madison, Georgia, and five great grandchildren, Avery Lorraine Geehr, Nicole Summers Geehr, Madison Moore Sarkin, Jacqueline Morgan Sarkin, and Phillip Clark Goldman. A memorial service will be held on June 29, at 10:30 AM at Westminster Woods on Julington Creek, Jacksonville, Florida, her home for the last 12 years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Community Hospice, 4266 Sunbeam Rd. Jacksonville, FL 32257, Cottey College 1000 W. Austin, Nevada MO 64772, or Epworth-by-the-Sea Methodist Center, 100 Arthur J. Moore Dr. St. Simons Is, GA 31522.
