Valparaiso, Ind. - Lois S. Williams, 85, of Valparaiso, formerly of Stonington and Chester, died on Sunday, July 7, 2013.She was born July 17, 1927, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Everett and Helen (Blake) St. John. A longtime teacher, Lois taught mathematics and other subjects, from grade five to college. She taught at Pine Point School, Mitchell College, Mohegan Community College and Quinnipiac College, as well as advancement math courses to sailors at the U.S. Submarine Base in Groton.Many described Lois as the loveliest person they knew. One adult student wrote her to express "my profound thanks for the patience and kindness you exhibited while I was under your tutelage." A 5th grader called her the best teacher, ending her letter, "P.S. I'm not kidding. You were the best teacher I ever had."Lois was valedictorian of the Staples High School Class of 1944 in Westport. She received a bachelor's degree in mathematics with honors from Smith College in 1948 and earned a master's in teaching from Connecticut College in 1968.After college, she worked at First Boston investment bank in New York. On June 20, 1953 in Westport, she married Edwin E. Williams. For almost 20 years she lived the line "Navy wife: the toughest job in the Navy," managing three kids, multiple moves and sojourns in California, Florida, Virginia and Connecticut."LoLo" was known for the personalized Christmas stockings and Icelandic sweaters she knit. She enjoyed opera, musical theater, doing crosswords and other puzzles, reading mysteries and adoring her succession of seven Boston Terriers. She was a prolific writer of multiple-carbon-copy letters to family across the country and around the world.Lois loved childhood summers spent in East Moriches, Long Island, with her adored grandparents and cousins. Lois and Ed enjoyed travels to England, Morocco, Japan, Italy and Canada, as well as to friend, family and reunion gatherings across the United States. And any excuse to visit the grandkids!Lois was preceded in death by her husband; parents; son, Seth Williams; stepmother, Mary Page St. John; and siblings, Mary Lyman St. John, Anne Wilbor Lunghino and Thomas W.
