Lois Jean Baker, 56, Mt. Vernon, passed away at 7:50 a.m. Thursday, July 28, 2005, in St. John's Hospital, Springfield, after a sudden illness from a brain aneurysm. Lois was born on April 2, 1949, in Monett to Lavern e and Clara (Wuellner) Schnake. On November 8, 1969, she was united in marriage with Denny Baker in Mt. Vernon. Lois devoted 26 years to the city of Mt. Vernon, working as collector and also municipal court clerk. She retired on June 30, 2005, as collector, but was to continue working part-time as court clerk. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, and loved spending time with friends and family, which included her dog, Lucy. Lois adored the time spent with Denny at the family farm, sitting around the kitchen island and going to Kansas City Chiefs games, but most importantly, spoiling her five wonderful grandchildren. She would often drive miles between towns to do whatever she needed to make time for her grandchildren, rarely missing their ball games or activities. She was an active member of the Mt. Vernon Eagles Lodge and member of Covenant Baptist Church. Lois is survived by her loving husband of 36 years, Denny one son, Grant Baker and wife, Lisa, Aurora one daughter, Alyson Krempges and husband, Jason, Miller five grandchildren, Kelsey, Kelyn and Kaleb Baker, Kaylie Wilson and Kolbie Krempges three brothers, LeRoy Schnake and wife, Sharon, Chilicothe, Mo., Leon Schnake and wife, Rene, Warrensburg, Mo., and Harlan Schnake and wife, Linda, Stotts City, Mo. four sisters, Geneva Childress and husband, Ronnie, Independence, Peggy Short and husband, Terry, Mt. Vernon, Ruth Johnson and husband, Don, Grandview, Mo., and Ailene Roach and husband, Edward, Mt. Vernon her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Benton and Jean Baker, Mt. Vernon sisters-in-law and their husbands, Don and Mary Jameson, Linda and Walter Vandergrift, and Donna and Cy King many nieces, nephews and many other loving family and friends. Her parents and brother, David Schnake, preceded her in death. Funeral services, under the direction of Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home, Mt. Vernon, will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the First Baptist Church, Mt. Vernon, with Rev. Mark Killingsworth officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Vernon City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, July 31st, in the Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Eagles Lodge, Mt. Vernon, for the Toys for Tots Christmas Drive, in care of the funeral home.
