Lois A. Baker March 27, 1929 - August 5, 2008 BROOKLYN - Lois Alma Baker, 79, passed away on Tues., August 5th at Haven Health Care Center of Windham where she had spent the last several years of her life. A long time resident of Brooklyn, Lois was born on March 27, 1929 in the house on Route 6 where she would live for 50 years. She was eldest of the four children of the late Elbra Leroy Baker and the late Bertha Louise (Hill) Baker. Miss Baker graduated from the Brooklyn School, Killingly High School, Class of 1947, and attended the University of Connecticut. Miss Baker was employed for many years at Inter Royal, (formally Royal Metal) in Plainfield where she worked as a switchboard operator and cheerfully greeted visitors as an unofficial good will ambassador for the company. Later in life she worked at Windham Lumber as a clerk. She also had regular following as a Tupperware representative Lois was a devoted member of the Federated Church of Christ in Brooklyn, where she served for many years on the Council of Churches. It has been said that she was instrumental in bringing the Catholic Church to the group. She was also an organizer of The Church Bell-specifically “The Partyline†segment and served in the church choir, as a Sunday school teacher, in the Ladies Group, as Financial Secretary and later aspired to Deacon. She was a member of the Brooklyn Grange No. 43 for over 60 years. Lois held several offices including 4 terms as Master of the Grange. She also belonged to the Quinebaug Pomona Grange No. 2, The Connecticut State Grange, and the National Grange. Other fraternal organizations which depended on Lois as “the go to gal†included the Harmony Court No.12, Order of the Amaranth in which she was installed as Royal Matron in 1956. Among other contributions, she served as a mentor to the young women of Rainbow court, known as the Rainbow Girls. With obvious influence from her father who had been a Mason, Lois was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She again followed his lead acting as a Justice of the Peace for the State of Connecticut. In that role Lois presided over many wedding ceremonies in the area including those in her own back yard. Fittingly, her last ceremony held in 2001 was between family friends at the Golden Lamb Restaurant. Lois also was active in the planning of the annual Brooklyn Fair and drew on her talents for baking, sewing and crocheting as she judged many of these entries. She held a Life Time membership and saw to it that her family members did as well. Lois lived for over 20 years on Pierce Ave., across from the Brooklyn fair grounds, with her mother and later, her sister Daisy. The three were fondly referred to as “The Golden Girls†by some family members because of the busy household that they ran. Lois lived at Westcott-Wilcox in Killingly for a short time as well, but her heart never left her beloved Brooklyn. She leaves behind two sisters and a brother, Daisy B. Tracy of Brooklyn, Elbert L. (Roy) Baker of Lantana, Fla., and Judy B. Taylor and husband David of So.Glastonbury, eight nieces and nephews and 10 grand nieces and nephews. Her family would like to extend their warmest appreciation and gratitude to her friends for keeping Lois in their thoughts and prayers over the years. Please join us in a memorial service to celebrate and honor her life on Saturday, October 4, 2008, at 1 o'clock, at the Federated Church of Christ, Brooklyn. Burial will follow at South Cemetery, Brooklyn. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Federated Church of Christ, Brooklyn, P.O. Box 204, Brooklyn,CT. 06234.
