Obituary of Lionel Richard


Lionel Joseph Richard, survived by his wife of 64 years, Ann (DeWolfe) of Moncton, formerly of (Newcastle) Miramichi passed away Monday March 30, 2009 just 28 days shy of his 92nd birthday, at the Moncton City Hospital with his daughter by his side. Born in Acadieville NB on April 27, 1917 he was the second oldest son of the late Amedee and Emelinne (Thibeau) of Nordin. Lionel joined the Canadian Army in 1943 and was shortly moved to the Merchant Marines until the end of the Second World War. He was employed with the CNR for over 40 years. He worked in Newcastle, Chipman and Moncton, his last years being a conductor, on the Moncton to Campbellton line. He has been retired for the last 26 years. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, a hard-worker and was a kind man with a loving heart. He cherished the great outdoors and spent most of his spare time enjoying the elements of nature. He had a great love for his family and many close friends and will be sadly missed by his 10 children: Brian (Vicky) of Miramichi, Keith (Norma), of Winnipeg Manitoba, Linda Beal (Reg) of Coverdale, Larry (Ruth) of Boundry Creek, Judy Russell (Brian) of Moncton, Diane Stacey (Kevin) of Moncton, Paula (Ted Cole) of Shediac, Wanda McLean (Doug) of Pennfield, N.B. Ralph (Debbie) of Miramichi and Joan Poitras (Marcel) of Moncton. He leaves behind 17 grand children and 20 great grandchildren, a sister Rosie (Louis) LeBlanc of Miramichi, brothers Ray (Peggy) of Ottawa, Art of Miramichi, and Bobby (Monique) of Elliott Like, Ontario and brother-in-law Harmon Savage Miramichi and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers Leo, Tony, and Alfred, sisters Doreen Savage and Edna Sullivan and grandson Jesse McLean. Lionel was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Moncton. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Friday, April 3, 2009, at 11 am, from St. Samuel's Roman Catholic Church, with Father Maurice Swift officiating. Organist Jacqueline Allain led the congregation in the singing of the hymns "Here I Am Lord", "Take Me Home", "Take and Eat", "Songs of the Angels", and "Lord Jesus of You I will Sing as I Journey". Readers were daughter Wanda McLean, daughter-in-law Norma Richard, and granddaughter Kerri Harris. Pallbearers were Lionel's grandsons Kevin Richard, Corey Stacey, Adam Stacey, Jordan Poitras, Skylar Richard, and Jeremy Filip. Internment will be in St. Samuel's Cemetery in the spring. In Lionel's memory, donations may be made to the Children's Wish Foundation or Diabetic Association. The family would like to sincerely thank the wonderful staff at the Moncton City Hospital for their care and compassion during Lionel's illness.
