Linda Bowman Jenkins, 72 CAMDEN -- Linda Bowman Jenkins, 72, of Camden, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Dec. 6, 2009, at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Mass., after a brief illness. Linda was born in Kannapolis, N.C., the daughter of Dr. Charles R. and Clara Young Bowman. Her family moved to Jackson, Mississippi in 1945. She was in the first class of students at St. Andrew's Day School. She continued on to Bailey Junior High School and graduated from St. Catherine's School in Richmond, Va. Linda graduated with an associate's degree from Pine Manor College in Wellesley, Mass., continuing on to earn her bachelor's degree in Art History from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. Upon graduation, she returned to Mississippi in 1960 where she taught preschool at St. Andrew's Day School prior marrying her husband John Allen Jenkins Jr. in 1961. While living in Jackson and raising her two daughters, Linda devoted her time to many civic and social organizations. She served as President and Sustaining member of the Junior League of Jackson, was a past President of the Goodwill Industries Volunteer Services Auxiliary, past President of the Jackson Preparatory School Choral Music Booster Club and served on the Boards of the Jackson Symphony League and the Debutante Club of Mississippi. Linda was a member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames in Mississippi, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Mississippi Museum of Art Gallery Guild, the Woodland Hills Garden Club, the Southern Luncheon Club and the Tres Gay Luncheon Club. She was a communicant of St. Andrew's Cathedral. In 1987, she and her husband, John, built a second home in Camden and eventually made this charming community on the coast of Maine their permanent residence. Linda's time in Camden was spent actively involved on the Board of the Camden Garden Club, as an inter League Sustaining member of the Junior League of Portland, and as a Courtesy member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames in Maine. She was a member of the both the Camden Yacht Club and Rockport Boat Club. She was a member of St. Thomas Church and co-chair of the Decorating Renovation Committee. Linda is survived by her husband of 48 years, John Allen Jenkins Jr.; her two daughters, Winafrid Avery Jenkins of Portland, and Claire Winston Jenkins of Boston, Mass.; and her brother Stanford 'Chip' Bowman and sister-in-law Melba Bowman of Pensacola, Fla.; along with four nephews and nine great-nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 13, at St. Thomas Church in Camden with a reception to follow at the family's home. A memorial service will be held in Jackson, Miss. after the first of the year, and an interment service will be held in Camden, late spring/early summer.
