Lillie White January 29, 1925 - July 1, 2013 ASHFORD - Lillie "Swish" White, 88, of Ashford, beloved wife of Malcolm, died Monday, July 1, 2013 at home. She was born Lillie Helen Gertrude Winans on January 29, 1925, in Worcester, MA, daughter of Gertrude Patience (Dyer) and William Henry Winans. Lillie met Malcom White in 1943, and after she graduated from Green Mountain College, they wed on June 22, 1946. Lillie earned her BA in Early Childhood Ed at UMass, Amherst. Known for her vitality and positive spirit, Lillie touched countless lives as a teacher, tutor, lecturer, director and conductor. In Wenham, MA, she directed middle school chorus and instituted an Orff Orchestra in Kodaly technique, later using these methods in her Music Enrichment classes at Pingree School and North Shore Country Day. During this time, Lillie was also engaged at Curry College teaching Music and Children's Music Theater. After moving to Ashford in 1973, Lillie continued her work at The Rectory School as a Music and Theater Teacher, and Language Retraining Tutor. As an avocation, Lillie was a singer and soloist in many church choirs and community choruses throughout MA and CT. Lillie was an avid reader, and especially loved cooking, nature, gardening, antiquing, tennis, water color painting and raising her four children. Until her passing, she was the light of many lives, especially for elderly friends, through her continual warmth, energy, charity and steadfast faith in God. Lillie is survived by her husband of 67 years, Malcolm, and their children Randall Grace of NC, Douglas White and wife Martha of Westbrook, Gerrit White and wife Susan of Rowe, MA, and Jesse Stunkel of North Thetford, VT; grandchildren include Alexander, Benjamin, Marguerite, Nicholas, and Celia White. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, July 27th at Christ Church in Pomfret.
