The first woman mayor in the state of Alabama died Saturday, June 12, 2010. Lillian Whitt White served 18 years in public service; eight as a city council member and 10 as mayor of Centre.Lillian was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Walden White. She trained as a nurse at Forrest General Hospital in Gadsden and for 44 years served as a nurse by Dr. White's side.She was a loyal member of Centre First United Methodist Church for 75 years and served in many areas of the church.She was also a member and past president of Cherokee County Medical Auxillary, BPW and other civic organizations.She was on the Mental Health Board of the county and was honored by having the Smeltzer-White Mental Health Home named for her. Most recently, a city street was named "Lillian White Street." Lillian is survived by her daughter, Pat Baker, and her dearly loved son-in-law, Dr. Charles Baker; and five grandchildren are left to cherish and remember her sense of humor, happy times and unconditioned love. They are Mark (Wanda) Baker, Meg Baker, Miriam (Clay) Morris, Reb Baker and Chum (Marilou) Baker. Four great-grandchildren also survive. She leaves behind her sisters, Novella Broom, Christine Meers and Frances Abel; two nieces, Anne Coker and Rebecca Franklin; and a great-niece, Jennifer Henslee.Pallbearers are Mark, Reb, Chum and Clay; her beloved nephew, Mike Broome; her great-grandson, Claiborne Morris; and dear friend, Dan Baker. Honorary pallbearers are Travis James, James Hurley, Johnny Proctor, Phil Powell and Bob Howell.She will lie in state from 1 to 2 today at Centre First United Methodist Church, with funeral services at 2 p.m. Burial will follow at the Garrett-Walden Cemetery.Flowers will be accepted or donations made to Centre First United Methodist Church building fund or a charity of your choice.
