Ruth was born in Ephraim, UT on February 24, 1919, to Lillian May Sparks and Burton Orlando Rust. The oldest of five children, Ruth spent her childhood in south-central Utah, graduating as Valedictorian from Valley High School in Orderville, UT in 1936. Ruth went on to graduate from Dixie College at St. George, UT in 1938. While at Dixie College, Ruth met J. Russel Smith, whom she married in 1938 in the Logan, UT Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Ruth and Russel moved to Washington D.C. in 1941 and then to Silver Spring, MD in 1953. Sweet and gentle, Ruth was devoted to her family and church. She served in the women's and children's organizations of The Church for many years. She loved music and participated in her church choir both as its president and as a singer. Ruth was also an avid supporter of the Boy Scouts of America and was an enthusiastic gardener. A highlight for Ruth was participating in the events connected with the construction and dedication of the Washington D.C. Temple. Ruth assisted her husband Russel, who served on the temple committee and was chairman of the missionary committee. Ruth's kindness and gentleness to all who knew her will forever be a part of her legacy. She is survived by two sisters, Marjorie Crofts and Marilyn Murie, and five children: Judith Baker, Dennis Smith, Paul Smith, Claudia Jean Hill, and Rusty Smith. Also surviving are 25 grandchildren and 51 great-grand children. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, husband, siblings Lois Valera Rust Thompson and Burton Lavoy Rust, and infant son Robert Russel Smith.On Saturday, February 16 there will be a viewing at Spilsbury Mortuary, 110 Bluff St., St. George, UT 84770, from 10:30 - 11:30 am. The funeral service will be in their chapel at 12 noon, followed by interment in the City of St. George Cemetery.
