Obituary of Lillian-Mary-Shelton White


WHITE Lillian Mary Shelton White, age 82, a lifelong resident of Fairfield, died October 26, 2009 at Bridgeport Hospital. She was the wife of Charles Francis White for 58 years. She was predeceased by her parents, Florence Jennings Burr and Philo Sherwood Shelton and an infant son, James Timothy White. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Arts and English from Skidmore College in 1949. She was a talented artist, gardener and won numerous awards for her beautiful floral arrangements. She was the past president and the longest tenured current member of the Greenfield Hill Garden Club. She enjoyed tennis, skiing, horseback riding and traveling. She was a long time member of the Fairfield Beach Club. A direct descendent of Jehue Burr, a charter settler of Fairfield, and of the Reverend Philo Shelton, who was the first Episcopal minister ordained in North America (in 1785) and was rector of St. John's Parish, Bridgeport and Trinity Church, Southport for 45 years. She is also the direct descendant of Sarah Shelton Henry, first wife of revolutionary orator, Patrick Henry. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children and their spouses, Mary and Stefan Ossowski of Chesterfield, Va., Sandra and Peter Altieri of Fairfield, James Sherwood and Suzanne White of Monroe, Tracey and Gregory Tuthill of Basking Ridge, N.J.; and seven grandchildren, Tyler Ossowski, Brianna and John Altieri, Megan and Aubrey White and Lillie and Trevor Tuthill; her sisters, Emma Cathcart, Martha LePrell and her husband, Laurence; and brother, Philo Shelton, Jr. and his wife, Carolyn. She was a kind, steadfast and loving person and will be sorely missed by her family. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 28, 2009, at 11 a.m. at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, 4672 Congress Street, Fairfield. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's charity of your choice. The Spear-Miller Funeral Home, 39 South Benson Road, Fairfield has been entrusted with the arrangements.
