Mr. Leon Wade Smith, 67, Mount Hope, Ala., died Monday, May 5, 2003, at Shoals Hospital.The funeral will be Thursday, May 8, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Pinkard Funeral Home chapel, Russellville, with burial in Mount Hope Cemetery. Officiating at the funeral will be Charlie Britnell, O.D. Bowling and Wallace Armstrong. Visitation will be Thursday from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. at the funeral home.Mr. Smith lived all his life in Lawrence County and was a member of Mount Hope Church of Christ. He was a volunteer with Mount Hope Fire Department, member of Lawrence County Historical Society, worked with youth football and baseball and was a member of Lawrence County Genealogical Society.He was a poetry writer and won the Golden Poetry Award in 1990 and 1991. He was a member of the Athletic Booster Club of Mount Hope School and was a poll worker at elections. He retired from the State Highway Department.He was preceded in death by his parents, Leon G. and Velma Pace Smith.He is survived by his sisters, Gevetta Smith, Mount Hope, Ala., Mary and husband, A.C. "Tip" McCreless, Hatton, Ala.; nieces, Susan McCreless, Huntsville, Ala., Sandy Moore, Baldwyn, Miss., Debbie Kerby, Hatton, Ala.; nephew, Wayne Kerby, Hatton, Ala.; great-niece and great-nephew, Athena and Shane Harrison; great-great-nephew, Brennon Harrison. Pallbearers will be Mount Hope Fire Department. Honorary bearers include Horace Smith, Elwyn Stephenson, Gerald Hester, Allen Counts, Calvin Smith, Harbert Smith, M.L. McCreless, Lelton Brown and Gene Pickens.Pinkard Funeral Home, Russellville, is directing.
