Lee Smith, 73, Punta Gorda, died Nov. 2, 2003. She was born Nov. 14, 1929, in Springfield, Ill., and came to Punta Gorda in 1996 from Peoria, Ill. She served in the Army, retiring with the rank of major, and was the EC officer, department chief of staff logistics, headquarters, 5th Army at Fort Sheridan, Ill. After leaving the Army, she was a dispatcher for the Illinois State Police for many years. She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 886 in Pontiac, Ill., the Women's Army Corps Veterans Association, and Women in Military Service for America. Survivors include brothers William M. of Edwards, Ill., and Pete of Bartonville, Ill.; and sisters Helen R. Gardner and Georgia Allison, both of Peoria, Ill., and Sharon Batterton of Stanford, Ill. A gathering of friends will be at 6 p.m. tonight at Larry Taylor Funeral and Cremation Services in Punta Gorda.
