Dr. Lee G. Henderson Dr. Lee G. Henderson, 81, a retired educator, died Monday, March 28, 2005, at his home in Westminster Oaks. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Elizabeth McIntosh Henderson. Burial with military honors will be at 3 p.m. EST today at MeadowWood Memorial Park on Timberlane Road. A memorial service and celebration of Dr. Henderson's life will be at 11 a.m. EST Saturday at Faith Presbyterian Church.Family will receive friends immediately following the service Saturday in the church fellowship hall. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mission Program, Faith Presbyterian Church, 2200 N. Meridian Road, Tallahassee, FL 32303; the WO Benevolent Assistance Endowment Fund, Westminster Retirement Communities Foundation, 80 W. Lucerne Circle, Orlando, FL 32801; or Big Bend Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd., Tallahassee, FL 32308.Bevis Funeral Home of Tallahassee (850-385-2193) is handling arrangements. A native of Miami, he and his family moved to West Palm Beach in 1930, where he graduated from Palm Beach High School in 1940 and Palm Beach Junior College in 1942, after which he enrolled in the University of Missouri School of Journalism.While in Missouri, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps as an aviation cadet. Upon graduation and commissioning, he became a B-24 bomber pilot, serving in the 8th Air Force in Norwich, England. After World War II, he enrolled in the University of Florida, graduating in 1947 with a bachelor's degree in business administration.He later earned both a master's degree and a doctorate in education, also from the University of Florida. He served as teacher, dean of students and assistant principal at Pensacola High School before becoming director of instruction for the Brevard County school system. In 1957, he moved to Tallahassee and, along with his friend and colleague Dr. James L. Wattenberg began to implement the Florida Plan for Community Colleges.In 1957 there were five local junior colleges in the state, enrolling fewer than 2,000 students. When he retired in 1984 as director of the State Division of Community Colleges, the system included 28 colleges, with more than 70 campuses and an enrollment of more than 600,000 students. Following his retirement he served as interim president of Florida Community College in Jacksonville.Locally, he was a member of Kiwanis International, receiving the Lay Person of the Year Award and the George F. Hixson Fellow Award. Dr. Henderson was a mentor to students at Chaires, Gilchrist and Riley elementary schools and was active with Habitat for Humanity, serving two terms on the board of directors.He was active in the work of the Presbyterian Church and was a member of Faith Presbyterian Church, where he served as teacher, Sunday school superintendent, deacon and elder and was named elder emeritus in 2003. Earlier he helped found the mission that became Covenant Presbyterian Church and was a charter member there.He served on five pulpit search committees, chairing three. At the regional level, he twice served as moderator of the Presbytery of Florida, once as moderator of the Synod of the South Atlantic and served as a member of the board of trustees of Eckerd College. At the national level, he was a member of the Presbyterian Church USA General Assembly's Committee on Higher Education.He twice served as commissioner to the general assembly of the Presbyterian Church USA and served two terms on the General Assembly's nominating committee, twice serving as chair. Other survivors include two sons, Craig Lee Henderson (and wife Mellanie) of Jacksonville and Preston McIntosh Henderson (and wife Marilyn) of Appleton, Wis.; two brothers, Dr. U.V. Henderson (and wife Evelyn) of Roanoke, Va., and the Rev. Robert Henderson (and wife Betty) of Tucker, Ga.; four grandchildren, Karen Henderson Rohe (and husband David) of Tallahassee, Amy Henderson of Atlanta, Michael Henderson of Milwaukee and Kelly Henderson of Jacksonville; two great-grandsons, Dean Alexander Rohe and Christopher Louis Rohe; and three cousins, Charles Henderson (and wife Betty) of Atlanta, Nan Chumbley of Coral Gables and Pat Reed of Cocoa.
