Obituary of Laurence-William-Tracy Sr


Laurence William Tracy Sr.     SACO -- Laurence William Tracy Sr. was born at his home in Saco, June 27, 1923, the son of Willie Emerson Tracy and Mildred May Huntress. He attended Saco schools, and in 1943 he married Ilma (Emmie) Nelson Wormwood.      In 1953 he began a 20 year career at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a welder, and later a Leadman in this country's construction of nuclear subs. After employment at the Maine Yankee Power Project at Wiscasset, he worked as a welding supervisor for Stone and Webster Corp. of Connecticut. There he participated in the construction of both the nuclear power plant at Haddam's Neck, East Haddam and at Millstone in Niantic, retiring in 1985.      An avid participant in all Masonic bodies, Mr. Tracy was raised to the sublime degree of a Master Mason at Old Orchard Beach Lodge #215. As an eight- time Worthy Patron of Aurora Chapter # 190, Order of the Eastern Star, Kennebunkport, he traveled extensively throughout the district assisting in installation, lectures and impeccable ritual, earning him many honorary memberships. For his beloved Eastern Star, he and his wife, Joyce, prepared a great number of benefit suppers.     While in Connecticut, Mr. Tracy joined the Valley of Norwich Scottish Rite Bodies and the Sphinx Temple of Newington, Conn., as a Shriner, he was extremely proud of holding duel membership with both Sphinx and Kora Temple of Lewiston. He was also a member of York County Shrine Club, Odd Fellows of Stonington, Deer Isle, where he spent many enjoyable times with extended family and friends. He was also a member of AMOS.      Regarding his pleasures beyond Eastern Star and preparing meals for large groups, Mr. Tracy was a skilled carpenter, woodworker and crossword enthusiast, enjoying other interests such as most crafts involving painting and chair caning. As he had done in early life in Saco, Mr. Tracy later attended the Salvation Army in Old Orchard Beach, and with his wife Joyce prepared meals in one of their many charitable programs. As heaven asked, he was a man of good heart.      He is survived by his wife, Joyce (Butler/Crowell) Tracy of Kennebunk and Saco whom he married in 1977. Children of his first marriage include Laurence W. Tracy Jr. of Kennebunkport, Patience E. Bell of Wells, and Cheryl H. Aranovitch of Old Orchard Beach; and one grandchild, Rhonda J. Tracy of Old Orchard Beach. Additional to their son Michael who died in 1986, surviving step-children are Anita Thibeau of Saco, Donna Berry of Waterboro, Herbert Crowell of Springvale, Timothy Crowell of Saco, Richard Crowell of Saco, Gary Crowell of Saco, David Crowell of Hollis; deceased step-children were Scott Crowell and Beatrice Stebbins. Also surviving are two brothers, Richard T. Tracy of LaGrange, Calif., and Walter N. Tracy of Saco, five sisters Evelyn M. Tenney of Biddeford, Ruth A. Huff of Saco, Mattie M. Hilton of Saco, Marion C. Levesque of Saco, Peggy J. Mildred Boudreau of Saco, and predeceased sister, Rachel Blunt, and brother, Donald F. Tracy. He is also survived by numerous nephews and nieces.      Visiting hours are to be held Friday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Salvation Army Citadel, 2 Church St., Old Orchard Beach, with an 11 a.m. funeral to immediately follow there. Burial will be in the spring at the Tracy Family lot, located at Woodlawn Cemetery in Biddeford.
