Laura-Nelle Brown, born in 1938, spouse of Christian Churches, daughter of James and Nellie, mother of Chad N, James Barry, Brookston and Elizabeth Jane, died on July 26, 2014 at 76 years old. Please consult the obituary here:
Laura Nelle (Hamilton) Brown, 76, Lafayette, passed away at 10:55 a.m. Saturday, July 26, 2014, at IU Health Arnett of Lafayette. She was born March 2, 1938 in Humboldt, Tenn. to the late James Wilton and Nellie (Phillips) Hamilton. Her marriage of 52 years was to Pastor Guy N. Brown on Aug. 13, 1961 in Humboldt, Tenn. at the Central Avenue Christian Church and he survives. She graduated from Humboldt High School in 1956. After high school, Laura graduated from Milligan College in Johnson City, Tenn. in 1960, with degrees in Social Studies and English. She was also a Lafayette Leadership graduate and attended the IUPUI Fund Raising School.Laura served with her husband at Christian Churches in Bristol, Tenn., Pearl, Ill., Williamsburg, Ky., Linwood Church of Christ in Lafayette, and Palestine Christian Church in Wolcott. She taught high school in Tennessee and Kentucky and was a certified social worker for the state of Indiana. She worked at Lafayette Healthcare, was a supervisor of case workers for the State of Indiana Tippecanoe County Child Welfare, and Executive Director of Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Wabash Valley. She became the supervisor of Case Management for Area IV Council on Aging, and after retirement, Laura worked part-time for Indiana Legal Services Inc. and served as Assistant Ombudsman.She enjoyed reading, needle work, speaking at retreats and mother/daughter banquets, but most of all, she loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.Surviving with her husband, Pastor Guy Brown, are her daughter, Elizabeth Jane (Bret) Turner, Brookston; sons, James Barry (Angela) Brown and Chad N. (Jennifer) Brown, both of Plainfield; and sister, Vera McCroskey, Bartlett, Tenn.She is also survived by her grandchildren, Kyle (Amy) Turner, Cortney (Norman) Henry, Kayla Turner, Kinsey Turner, Cody Turner, Nathan Brown, Brandon Brown, Karisa Brown, Tyler Brown, Joy Brown, Aslan Brown, Alexander Brown, and Levi Brown; her great-grandchildren, Drew and Blake Turner, Madilynn Henry, and one on the way; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death with her parents is her brother, Dr. Jim Hamilton.Friends may call from 4 - 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hartzler-Clapper Funeral Home of Brookston. Funeral Service will be there at 10 a.m. Wednesday with interment to follow at Palestine Cemetery of Wolcott.Memorials may be made to the Palestine Christian Church.See: www.clapperfuneralservices.com
