LEWIS Bernice Allen Lewis passed away at her home in Kingsland, Ga. after a brief illness. She was 87 years old. Born in Grand Ridge, FL, to Ed & Sarah Allen, she spent her early years in Jacksonville, FL, where she graduated from Andrew Jackson High School in 1941. That year, she met a young soldier stationed at Camp Blanding, Fl. In 1949, she and that former soldier, Elijah Belmont Lewis married and moved to Phenix City, AL, where she was a homemaker and mom. During those years she was active in her community, serving as a substitute teacher in the Phenix City School System. In later years, she was employed with Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, where she retired as Office Manager. She was an active, faithful, and along with her husband, one of the founding members of Holland Creek Baptist Church. She leaves a legacy of two children: a daughter, Sarah Lewis Starling of Jacksonville, FL; and a son, Edward Belmont Lewis (Susan) of Cowarts, AL; four grandchildren: Robert Edward Starling, Daniel Collins Lewis, Jordan Allen Lewis, and Elizabeth Brooke Lewis. She is also survived by her sister, Grace Mehrtens (Bill) of Kingsland, GA. She is predeceased by her husband, Elijah Belmont Lewis; her parents, Ed & Sarah Allen; two brothers, Charles Edward Allen and Virgil Eudonald Allen; and a sister, Thelma Maney. Funeral Services will be held at Vance Memorial Chapel on Thursday, December 1, 2011 at 2:00 pm EST with Visitation there, beginning at 1:00. Please Sign the Guestbook @ Jacksonville.com
