Obituary of Lester-Clemon Smith


SMITH, Lester Clemon TSgt. Ret. Passed away Sunday, July 9, 2006 at Covenant Hospice in Pensacola, FL with loved ones at his side. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary Drue and daughter, Gaye Ellis & son-in-law, Craig of Ft. Walton Beach; sister, Martha and brother-in-law Billy Fuller of Eclectic, AL and sister Betty Ruth Smith of Montgomery, AL along with many nieces and neph-ews. He was born on Decem-ber 26, 1936 in Jefferson Coun-ty, AL. He is preceded in death by his parents, Jessie and Clemon C. Smith, his sister Sue and her husband Dr. Harry Phillips. Lester served proudly for 20 years in the USAF as an aircraft maint. Specialist and crew chief. He was stationed in Pleiku, Vietnam (1966-67) where he helped restore an A-1E Skyraider downed by ene-my fire in a rescue mission. The plane is displayed at the Air Force Armament Museum in Dayton, OH. He was an instruc-tor at the 373rd Field Training Detachment at Hurlburt Field. After retirement, he purchased a Kenworth tractor and hauled in the lower 48 and canada - he carried a part of the space shuttle from Huntsville. His third career was as owner of Smith's Air Conditioning and Heating doing res./com. Installation and repair throughout Escam-bia, Santa Rosa, and Okaloosa counties. He was a lifetime member of the VFW and NCOA, and Past Commander of VFW Post 10479. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #66. Visitation will be at Lewis Funeral Home in Navarre, FL from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 13, 2006 with a memorial service immediate-ly following at 7:00 p.m. A sec-ond visitation will be held at Gassett Funeral Home in We-tumpka, AL from 1:00 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 16, 2006 with interment following at 3:00 p.m. in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Eclectic, AL with Rev. Mark Smith officiating with full military honors.
