Dr. Kenneth McDonald Douglas January 28, 1922 - November 2, 2008 - DOUGLAS, Kenneth McDonald, M.B., Ch.B., F.R.C.S. (Edinburgh), F.R.C.S. (London), F.C.A.S., F.R.C.S. (Canada) at his residence on Sunday, November 02, 2008 in his 87th year. Born in Essex, England, Ken was the son of the Rev. David George Douglas (Rector of St. Paul’s, Kilburn, London) and Gertrude Alice Rowell. He graduated from the University of Edinburgh medical school at age 23. Ken did his medical and surgical residencies at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. From 1947 to 1949, Ken was Surgeon-Lieutenant R.N.V.R. stationed at Royal Naval Barracks in Portsmouth, and Medical Officer for HMS St. Vincent, Gosport, Hampshire. From 1949 to 1953, Ken served surgical appointments at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary and the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital. In 1949, Ken married D. Joan Criddle, an officer in the Women’s Royal Naval Corps. . In 1953, Ken & Joan embarked on a posting with the Royal Air Force in Canada, where he served with the rank of Squadron Leader at CFB Trenton, as Surgeon to Training Command. Ken established a private practice in Belleville, Ontario in 1958. At Belleville General Hospital (later Quinte Regional Medical Centre), Ken served terms as Chief of Surgery, President of the medical staff, and member of the Board of Governors. Ken served as a consultant surgeon at Belleville, Trenton, Campbellford and Picton Hospitals. He was always grateful to the BGH nursing staff who worked tirelessly beside him in so many triage and emergency situations. Ken was Surgeon to the Belleville St. John Ambulance Unit, and was awarded the rank of Serving Brother by the late Governor General Vanier. Ken was predeceased by his wife of 40 years, Dorothy Joan Criddle, in 1988. Ken was predeceased by his second wife of 17 years, Kathleen Joan Horne, in 2006. Ken is survived by his son, Stephen Douglas (Martine Dalet) of Paris, France, and by his daughters, Jane Douglas of Belleville, and Anne Crawford (George) of Toronto; his four grandsons, James and Stephen Crawford, and Benjamin and Stephen Sutton; his nephew, Dr. James Douglas of Fort William, Scotland, and his niece, Roslyn Samuels of Durham, England. Ken was predeceased in 1995 by his only brother, Lt-Cmdr. John A. Douglas, MBE, who served as Chief Inspector of the British Coastguard. His only sister, Kathleen Douglas, died in 1925. An avid sailor, Ken’s sailing adventures involved local racing at the Bay of Quinte Yacht Club, teaching navigation, and extensive voyages in Lake Ontario, Georgian Bay and the North Channel. He crewed for two seasons out of Miami in the Southern Ocean Racing Circuit, and enjoyed many sailing vacations in the Caribbean. Over the years, Ken enjoyed his memberships in the 22 Club, the Probus Club, Rotary Club of Belleville, Quinte Model Yacht Club, Hastings & Prince Edward Historical Society, Belleville Lay School of Theology. Ken was an active member of St. Thomas’ Anglican Church. There will be no visitation. Arrangements entrusted to the care of the BURKE FUNERAL HOME (613 968-6968) 150 Church St., Belleville. A private interment has taken place at the Belleville Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at St Thomas Anglican Church on Saturday, December 06, 2008 at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial donations to VON Canada Foundation, directed to VON Hastings & Prince Edward (HNPE) branch.
