LAKE WALES -- Eating home-cooked meals and leading an active lifestyle contributed to the longevity of Mrs. Katie Mae Williams, who remained active into her 90s."She didn't eat a lot of fast food. She ate home-cooked, nutritious meals with dessert," her niece, Jacqueline Bryant of Tallahassee, said. "She ate collard greens, black-eyed peas, fried chicken and fish, and home-cooked vegetables."The retired maid died of heart failure Tuesday (July 18, 2006) at Haines City Health Care. She was 101.Born in Pelham, Ga., on May 25, 1905, she was one of 11 children. Her mother passed away after the birth of the youngest child, leaving her father, who lived to be 96 years old, to raise the children by himself.The family came to Bartow from Pelham when Mrs. Williams was very young, moving to Lake Wales shortly after.Mrs. Williams worked as a domestic worker in Lake Wales for a number of years.Mrs. Williams was described as a lively, fun-loving person who liked dancing and was a very good cook."She made a fabulous coconut cake," Bryant said. "She lived her life very well and took very good care of herself."She was a longtime member of First Institutional Missionary Baptist Church in Lake Wales where she was a member of Choir No. 2, and Senior Women Mission Department.Mrs. Williams is survived by her sister, Maudie Jones, Lake Wales.Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at First Institutional Baptist Church in Lake Wales. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the church.Burial will be in Willow Lawn Cemetery. Epps Mortuary, Lake Wales.
