Memorial service for Kathryn K. Johnson, 90, White Street, Daytona Beach, who died peacefully at home Sat., Dec. 2, 2006, will be 11 a.m. today (Tuesday, Dec. 5) in the chapel of Baggett & Summers Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jimmy Smith officiating. Her family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. until service time. Born in Olar, S.C., Mrs. Johnson moved to this area in 1953. She graduated from Mainland High School in 1935 and received her nursing certificate in 1939 in Columbia, S.C. She was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Nurses Corps from 1942 until 1945, achieving the rank of first lieutenant. She was a registered nurse at Halifax Medical Center from 1953 until her retirement in 1978. She worked as head nurse at Daytona International Speedway from 1959 until her retirement in 1995. Kathryn was an avid Atlanta Braves fan, enjoyed watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune, and supporting FSU football. She had a special place in her heart for all of the NASCAR drivers and especially the Petty, Allison, and Waltrip families. She shared her love of sewing and crafts with her family and friends. Her independent spirit, her special love of people, and her talent for giving will be missed by many. Kathryn was predeceased by two brothers, Nick Kirkland and Tony Kirkland; six sisters, Mary Kirkland, Sara Gary, Ione Odom, Harriet Gilmore, Carolyn Wehner and Lura Kester; and special friend, Elizabeth Petty. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Jan Johnson, Sneads; granddaughter, Sarah Kathryn Johnson; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
