Kathleen Brooks Kesler Murphy, 91, of Flowery Branch passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2011, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center following a brief illness.Funeral services are scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, in the chapel of Memorial Park Funeral Home with interment to follow in Oakwood City Cemetery. The Rev. Jeff Benefield will officiate. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 25, at the funeral home.Mrs. Murphy was born Oct. 16, 1919, in Pendergrass to the late Ernest Brooks and Rosa Haggard Brooks. She was a pioneer in education with 32 years of teaching and serving eight years on the Hall County Schools Board of Education. Kathleen was the first special education Teacher in Gainesville and Hall County, the first woman to be elected to a public office in Hall County and the first woman to be granted a VA loan to build a house in Gainesville and Hall County. She loved traveling, reading, bird watching and gardening. Her family was everything to her, her entire life. Kathleen was preceded in death by her parents; and her husbands, Thomas G. Kesler and Albert D. Murphy and was a member of Chestnut Mountain Church.Mrs. Murphy is survived by her six children, Barbara and Ken Boyer, Patricia and Merlin Suggs, Rose Owen, Sandy and Gary Fine, Reg and Debbie Murphy and Sunny and Christie Murphy; 10 grandchildren, Monica, Trey, Shaun, Millie, Heather, Molly, Jessica, Brittany, Christopher and Paige; 11 great-grandchildren, Somer, Jake, McKenzie, Jackson, Madison, Sullivan, Eli, Samantha, Lexi, Isabella and Owen; three sisters, Emma Dennis, Virginia Bradford and Patsy Maddox; three brothers, Emory Brooks, Bill Brooks and Davis Brooks.Flowers are accepted or donations may be made to Gateway House, P.
