Obituary of Kathleen Bentley

BENTLEY _ Kathleen Louie (nee Foulkes), suddenly on January 8, 2003, while with a friend. Katie, to all those who knew and loved her, was born on September 23, 1938 in Rhyl North Wales and came to Canada in 1967. Always one for a new adventure, and willing to explore her surroundings, Katie crisscrossed the country and made homes for her family in Calgary, The Pas, and Toronto before finally settling in North Vancouver. Katie began her time in television and film in England with her work on "The Saint", and continued with her contributions to Canadian history and culture during her career with the CBC and her time on the set of "The Beachcombers". She also shared her many talents through volunteering on amateur theatre productions. Katie's life brought her many new friends from differing places such as the beauty and wilds of The Sunshine Coast, to the urban settings of Vancouver. Katie struggled, and fought bravely for over 15 long years against cancer. Never one to give in to her battle, she became an active member of cancer survivors' groups, as well as the organizing force behind a therapeutic retreat for women also touched by the disease. Despite the length of her treatments and the amount of energy that they required, Katie kept her spirits high, lived her life with vigour, and the utmost dignity and grace. Katie is sadly missed and survived by brothers, Roger and Derek Foulkes; sisters-in-law Audrey and Paddy, all of England; her loving daughters Nicola and Paula; sons-in-law Denis and Rob and grandsons, Tristan and Talen; as well as her extended family of extra daughters, and friends that are too many to name. The family would like to extend special thanks to doctors Karen Gelmon and Marilyn Horn, as well as th eir staff, for their years of caring and healing. A celebration of Katie's life will be held at the Boal Memorial Chapel, 1505 Lillooet Road, in North Vancouver on Thursday January 16th, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers please send donations in Katie's memory to The Canadian Cancer Society in support of Breast Cancer Research.
