HERMON - Kathleen Annoyce (McGown) Harris, 82, died July 18, 2010, after a long illness. She was born Aug. 6, 1927, in Carmel, daughter of Roger and Annie Mabel (Patten) McGown. Kathleen graduated from Carmel High School, Class of 1945. After graduating from Maine School of Commerce, she taught business classes and coached girls' basketball at Brooks High School. On Oct. 13, 1950, she married Ralph Harris. During their 56 years together, they enjoyed traveling across the country several times to visit relatives in California. She was a substitute teacher in local schools for many years. In 1995, she received her honorary baccalaureate degree from Husson College. She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and Carmel Congregational Church. Kathleen was an avid knitter, and enjoyed counted cross-stitching, making Christmas stockings for family members. She enjoyed playing bingo and looked forward to watching the high school basketball tournament every February. Kathleen was a dedicated volunteer for 33 years in the X-ray and nuclear medicine departments of Eastern Maine Medical Center, donating more than 13,500 hours of service. Her gifts of giving at EMMC were rewarded several times over by the wonderful friends she made there, who even after she was no longer able to work, continued to brighten her days by cards, visits and phone calls. She is survived by her children, Ralph J. Harris of Augusta, Rhonda Crowley and husband, Bill, of Carmel, and Roxanna Gould and husband, Audie, of Hermon; four grandchildren, Scot Gould of Bowdoinham, Amy Gould of Hermon, Matthew Crowley of Carmel and Adam Crowley of Carmel; three great-grandchildren, Wanda Kathleen Gould, Alexander Taylor and Mason Crowley; a sister, Barbara Oldenburg of Hermon; a foster brother, Perry Crabtree of Greensboro, N.C.; and two sisters-in-law, Charlotte Harris of Bangor and Mary Harris of Eastbrook. She also leaves behind six very special nieces, Gaynor Reynolds, Gail Sinclair, Karen Schacht, Kate Hoak, Loretta Opsal and Leitha Robinson; and special cousins, Dorothy Verrill and Alan McGown. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Roger McGown Jr.; and a sister, Eula Littlefield. The family extends a special thanks to Dr. Stephen Comeau, Dr. Michael McGoldrick, Spencer Speed and the staff at Boyd Dialysis Center for their compassionate care throughout the past 19 months. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Thursday, July 22, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, where funeral services will be held 9:30 a.m. Friday, July 23. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments after the service at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor.
