Kate Maguire, died. Please consult the obituary here:
MAGUIRE, Kate On 3 January 1959, Kate Maguire entered the world and started bringing laughter to people's lives. With loving parents and sister Sally, Kate spent her childhood years in San Francisco and Marin County, making music and being the entertainer. At the age of 13 Kate moved with her family to Victoria, where she graduated from Oak Bay High School. By her late teens Kate's gift for enjoying people and making them laugh was in full swing, as were her musical talents. In addition to working weekends in a piano bar, she was playing trumpet in Victoria's best big band, by far the youngest band member and the only woman. Kate was one of the pioneer nerdgirls, sharing formidable computer skills from the time of the first Mac and using the earliest versions of Photoshop to serve her quick, wicked wit. For many years Kate worked as a computer-based graphic designer, at first in Vancouver and then on Saturna. Long-time island residents will recall her Scottie, Buster the Wonder Dog, who made an electoral bid as an Independent, promising a rufferendum on universal vet care. Kate's openhearted, generous spirit brought many friends into her life; those who knew her best were also sustained by her courage and intense loyalty. On 14 September 2008 Kate died of cancer. She will be missed beyond all words. Kate, your laughter is in our hearts. A memorial will be held on Saturna. 500454
