ObituaryKAREN R. SMITHGROTON - Karen R. Smith, 45, of 710 Elm St., Groton died July 25, 2003 at her home after an extended illness.Born August 30, 1957 in Ogdensburg, NY, she was the daughter of Susan Legg Rice of Scipio Center and Francis Loan of Niagara Falls, NY.Moving to this area in 1989, she had been employed with Cornell University, working up until her illness forced her home. She had enjoyed cooking, baking and sewing in her spare time and loved to dance.Besides her parents she is survived by her husband of 13 years, Percy C. Smith at home; her sons, Joshua Perkins of Auburn, NY and Sean Perkins of North Carolina; her stepsons, Brandon Smith of South Carolina and Luke Smith of Groton. Her brothers, Alex Loan of Searcy, AR and Daryl Loan of Seattle, WA; a sister, Robin Emmi of Clinton, NY, also survive her along with two grandchildren.The family wishes to hold private services and graciously accepts memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society.Arrangements are in the care of Zirbel Funeral Home, of Groton.
