Karen-Pfleeger Smith, born in 1947, spouse of Joseph-B. Smith, daughter of Lucile, mother of Sharon Lucille, Tn, Roy Clark, Joseph B and La, died on August 2, 2012. Please consult the obituary here:
Karen Pfleeger Smith passed away on August 2, 2012 after a long battle with cancer. Karen was born March 9th, 1947 in the Presbyterian Hospital, New York City to Walter Clarke and Lucile Harkness Pfleeger. She is survived by her mother Lucile of Sewell, formerly of Glassboro, her daughter Sharon Lucille Lee of Hermitage, TN, her son Roy Clark Smith and former husband Joseph B. Smith of Hammond, LA. She is also survived by her brother, David Pfleeger of Charlotte, NC. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. She attended the GSC Campus Elementary School and graduated from Glassboro High School in 1965. Karen excelled in playing violin and viola. She studied with Byrnina Socolofski and Leonard Mogill of the Philadelphia Orchestra. She was a member of the GSC Campus Orchestra, Glassboro High School Orchestra, Woodbury Symphony Orchestra and Glassboro State College Orchestra. Some of her happiest summers as a child were spent attending the Tally-Ho Music camp operated by Eastman School of Music, Rochester NY. She was also a member of the NJ All State HS Symphony Orchestra and the All Eastern HS Symphony Orchestra, performing in Buffalo and Boston. Karen graduated from West Virginia University in 1971 with a BS degree in music. She was also a member of their Symphony Orchestra. Karen resided in West Virginia and Louisiana where she was a member of the Gulf Coast Symphony, Gulfport, MS. She returned to Glassboro in 1990. She studied at Rowan University and became certified to teach special education and early childhood education. She especially enjoyed teaching in the Head Start program. Karen was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Glassboro. She enjoyed being a member of the Glassboro Lions Club and was a past President. She was also a member of the Greater Glassboro Group and the South Jersey NOW Alice Paul Chapter. She was an avid sports fan. The family would like to thank The Dream Foundation for making it possible for Karen to meet personally her favorite celebrity, Barry Manilow. Also thanks to Comprehensive Cancer & Hematology Specialists, P.C. in Washington Township. The Terraces at Parke Place and Compassionate Care Hospice for their outstanding care during Karen's illness. The family would also like to thank Ellata DeBerry for her years of dedicated care of Karen. The family will receive visitors on Monday, August 6th from 3-4pm at First Presbyterian Church of Glassboro, 300 University Blvd. Memorial Service will follow at 4 pm.
