ALEXANDER, William, Jr. William "Bill" Murray Alexander, Jr. passed away on June 13, 2009 in Atlanta. He was 84. Born July 16, 1924 in Atlanta, Alexander served in the Georgia House of Representatives (1971- 1974). He later served as a political aide to former Atlanta mayors Andrew Young and the late Maynard Jackson, representing the City of Atlanta before the Georgia General Assembly. Alexander was treasurer of Adair Realty & Loan Co. for many years before entering politics. A graduate of Atlanta's Tech High, he entered the U.S. Army in 1943. As a member of the 87th Infantry (the "Golden Acorn" Division), Third Army, Alexander served at the Battle of the Bulge and received the Purple Heart for a leg wound. Following an honorable discharge as a staff sergeant, Alexander returned to his studies and was graduated from the University of Georgia, receiving a bachelor of business administration degree in 1948. He was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. Alexander married his childhood sweetheart, the late Sarah Anna Huffaker, in 1947. He served as a Scoutmaster for 21 years and received the Silver Beaver Award for his commitment to Scouting. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Atlanta and was treasurer of Trinity Community Ministries. Alexander is survived by his brother James O. Alexander of McDonough; his two sons, William Murray Alexander, III, and Robert Alexander, of Atlanta; four grandchildren, Ryan Furr of Mableton; Anna Jean Alexander of McDonough, William Murray Alexander, IV, of Jonesboro, and Trevor Gunther Alexander of Atlanta; and four great grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are being handled by H.M. Patterson & Son. A memorial service will be held at 5:30p.m., June 20, 2009 at Trinity United Methodist Church. Private burial services will be held at Westview Cemetery.
