MCDONALD, Joyce Bourne In her 96th year, Joyce Bourne McDonald of Fitzroy Harbour passed away at her daughter's home in Virginia. Joyce was born on September 4, 1913, in Altringham, England, but lived in Ottawa and the Ottawa area most of her life. Joyce served in World War II as a decoder with the British Secret Service under Sir William Stephenson's operations in New York City for which she received a citation for her work. She returned to Ottawa and married John R. McDonald, who predeceased her in 1997. Together they raised a family in Virginia where John owned and operated McDonald Nurseries. They retired to the family homestead on the Ottawa River in 1966. She was a skier, tennis player, and, later, an avid bridge player. She lived life well. She had never been seriously ill, took no medication, and did not have a personal doctor. She was noted for her excellent penmanship, her keen mind, her strength and independence even into her final days. She is survived by five children, six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. A graveside service will be held at the Whyte Cemetery in Fitzroy Harbour at a future date.
