Obituary of Joyce-Edna Taylor

JOYCE EDNA BURKE Joyce Edna Burke (nee Taylor) passed away peacefully in hospital in British Columbia on Jan. 22, 2005 after a brief illness. She was born May 9, 1925 to Frank and Lily Taylor of Fort Frances, Ont. Survived by her brothers, Ed (Carolyn), Ray (Cathy), and John (Carole); nephews, Frank, David, and Bobby; and niece, Leann. She was the loving mother of Ted (Lise), Chris (Dean), and Susan (Randy). She also was the proud grandmother of six, Matthew, Jamie, and Cheyenne Clause of Ottawa, Ont., and Richard, Garrett, and Francis Burke of Kitchener-Waterloo, Ont. Joyce graduated from the Radio School at Queen’s University and began her career at CKFI radio station in Fort Frances, then continued as a radio personality in Kitchener-Waterloo. She met and married Edward (Ted) Arthur Burke in Ottawa, and retired from working to raise her children. As a military wife, Joyce travelled extensively throughout Canada, and lived in such places as British Columbia, Manitoba, the Northwest Territories, and Ontario. Joyce also had the pleasure of visiting England in 1953 for the coronation of the Queen, and spoke often of this journey. Joyce returned to England for holidays several times in the following years, where she had the opportunity to meet her distant relatives. Joyce achieved the position of Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Lorraine Chapter 44 in Ottawa, and was actively involved in the White Shrine, also in Ottawa. When her children were old enough, Joyce returned to work at the Ontario Heart Foundation as well as volunteering with the Lung Association. She enjoyed working with people and imparting her knowledge, such as teaching Inuit children in Inuvik and cooking classes in Ottawa. After retiring from the Heart Foundation to Carleton Place, Ont., Joyce relished her days of country living overlooking the Mississippi Lake. After this time, Joyce travelled to British Columbia and resided with her daughter, Chris. She also had the pleasure of returning to Ottawa to spend time with her son, Ted, and her grandchildren before continuing to the home of her daughter, Susan, and getting to know her grandchildren there. Joyce then returned to British Columbia and spent her remaining time with her many friends again enjoying a country life overlooking Okanagan Lake. She had a passion for cooking, reading, and doing puzzles, thoroughly enjoyed being near lakes and rivers, and treasured cats in all forms. A service was held in Kelowna, B.C., and attended by her daughters and her son and grandchildren in spirit. The entire family plans on gathering in Fort Frances this summer to celebrate her life. She will be missed by many and remembered by all.
