September 27, 2012 Joshua Michael Smith, U.S. Navy petty officer, 3rd class, passed from this life on Thursday, September 27, 2012 after a tragic car accident in Saratoga, New York. Born in Syracuse on October 30, 1991 to Suzanne Stein and Kevin M. Smith, Josh resided in both Onondaga and Madison counties before enlisting in the U.S. Navy. He graduated from West Genesee High School in 2010 and enlisted in the Navy in July of 2011. During his first year of naval service, Josh quickly attained the rank of machinist's mate and currently held the rank of petty officer, third class. Josh graduated on September 14 from the Naval Nuclear Power Training Command in Charleston, South Carolina and had just transferred to the West Milton Nuclear U.S. Navy Power Program in Ballston Spa to begin his final training to become a nuclear power engineer. Josh had a great love of music and art and easily made friends wherever he went. Predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Joseph and Anne Stein and his paternal grandfather, John Smith. Survived by his mother, Suzanne Stein of Cuyler, NY; his father, Kevin (Mary) Smith of Syracuse; four siblings, Justin (Rachel) Smith of Winchester, Virginia, Stephanie (Daniel Shutts) Smith of Cuyler, NY, Jeffery Smith of Winchester, Virginia, Michele Smith Wilde of Alexandria, Virginia; his paternal grandmother, Christine Smith of Syracuse; one nephew, Jace James Smith of Winchester, Virginia a/k/a "Little Squat" to his uncle, "Home Slice"; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and the "brother of his heart", Justin R. Fish, along with many wonderful friends from all over the country. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on THURSDAY at 10:30 a.m. at Most Holy Rosary Church in Syracuse with the Rev. John Ahern officiating. The Rite of Committal and burial will be FRIDAY at 11 a.m. in the Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery in the Town of Onondaga.
