Mrs. Josephine "Jo" White, 73, entered into eternal rest on Jan. 28, 2011, the culmination of an earthly life that overflowed with faith and love. Although a resident of Liberty County since 1973, she was born in Atlantic City, N.J., on May 8, 1937, to the late Joseph and Louise James, yet because of her mother's early passing, she was lovingly raised by her grandmother Miller and aunts Aretha Dennis and Hattie May James. While she worked for more than 20 years in the civil service, Mrs. White dedicated countless hours serving others and the Lord. A devoted deaconess of First Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, she served as president and treasurer of the Missionary Ministry, treasurer of the Pastor's Aid Ministry and served on the program committee for Gabriel's House. She was a lifetime member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and chairman of the annual Henry "Hank" White Youth Scholarship Golf Tournament. She also volunteered for the American Red Cross, the American Cancer Society and Liberty Regional Medical Center. Mrs. White was also proud to be a member of the Red Hat Society and somehow seemed to always find time to play bridge with a dear group of friends on a regular basis. Truly a woman of God, Mrs. White led her life, molded her children's lives and influenced a multitude of others by example. She not only displayed the scripture, "Choose you this day whom ye will serve; ...as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord" (Joshua 24:15) in her home, she clung to it. And because of her unwavering faith, so do her children. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 47 years, Deacon Henry "Hank" White, her infant son, Curtis Joseph White, her parents, grandmother and aunts Aretha Dennis and Hattie May James.Mrs. White leaves countless family members and friends to cherish her memories and continue her legacy of service and love, including children, Irene J. White and Henry "Hank" White Jr. (Deirdre) of Hinesville, and Derek J. White (Kelli) of Pooler; her siblings, Mayola James, Robert James and Joseph James Jr. of Philadelphia; sister-in-law Betty Blann of Baltimore, Md., brothers-in-law, Samuel White (Ramona) of Chiselhurst, N.J., and Anthony Boyer (Joyce) of Jacksonville; aunt, Marie Wynn of Egg Harbor, N.J.; grandsons, Ben Cook Jr. (Brittany) of Goose Creek, S.C., and Alex Cook of Pooler; great-grandsons, Benjamin and Braydon Cook of Goose Creek; favorite niece, Toni Woodland; "adopted" daughters, Beverly Weston and Hattie Harvey of Hinesville; and a host of godchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mrs. White, our angel-loving matriarch, now has wings of her own. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4, and there will be a celebration service at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, both at First Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, 124 Rebecca St. in Hinesville. Interment will be in First Calvary Cemetery in Hinesville. In lieu of flowers, remembrances are suggested to the Henry "Hank" White Youth Scholarship fund at The Heritage Bank of Hinesville. Dorchester Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
