->AUGUSTA -- Joseph L. Harrington, 90, a resident of Main Street, Monmouth, died April 3, 2009, at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta.He was born July 6, 1918, in Patten, the son of Boyd and Ida (Gagnon) Harrington. Joe graduated from Patten High School. He continued his education at University of Maine in Orono, graduating in 1940 with a bachelor of science in degree in agriculture. While at UMO, he played on the football team for four years.On June 14, 1944, he and Margaret Cheney were married. Joe proudly served in the Marines. He was a captain in the Marines, 1st Marine Division. He served in the South Pacific during World War II and took part in the Battle of Guadalcanal. He worked as a farmer and was employed by Maine Department of Agriculture. He retired at age 65.He was a member of the Universalist Church in Greene, the VFW, the Lions club and the Elks club. Joe enjoyed reading, current events, working around the house and yard, visiting with family and friends, boating and hiking in the summer and snowmobiling in the winter. He continued snowmobiling into his 80s and water-skied until he was 75. He taught many of his kids and grandkids to ski, a sport many of them enjoy today. He was well-read and informed on many subjects and enjoyed talking about many things. His favorite topics were farming and World War II.He is survived by his wife, Margaret Harrington of Monmouth; two sons, Warren Harrington and his wife, Lucy, of Marquette, Mich., and James Harrington and his wife, Sally, of Portage, Mich.; three daughters, Vicki Banton and her husband, Craig, of Cumberland Center, Rita Rivers and her husband, Ron, of Auburn, Wash., and Paula Miller of Palatka, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Pauline M. Woodside and her husband, Robert, of San Antonio, Texas. He was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, Edgar B. Harrington and Boyd M. Harrington Jr.Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 7, at Bragdon-Finley Funeral Home, 707 Main St., Monmouth. Visiting hours are 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Interment will occur in Monmouth Ridge Cemetery, Cemetery Road, Monmouth.
