Joseph A. Dussault, 89 SCARBOROUGH -- Joseph A. Dussault, a long time restaurateur who established Joseph's by the Sea in Old Orchard Beach, died on Aug. 22, 2014, at the Maine Veteran's Home in Scarborough. He was 89. Joseph was born in East Weymouth, Mass., on Sept. 23, 1924, to Arthur and Marie Gaillardet Dussault. A graduate of East Weymouth High School, he enlisted in the Army in 1944 and spent two years as part of the 392nd Medical Company. Joe spent most of his tour of duty in Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. His Medical Unit reached Omaha Beach the day after the Normandy invasion in June of 1944. In 1948 Joseph married Mariette Janelle in Lewiston. There, as a carpenter and painter, he entered into a partnership to form the Colonial Decorating Service. In 1968 he and Mariette moved to Old Orchard Beach to establish Joseph's by the Sea Restaurant. They worked tirelessly to make it a success. Joe cheerfully greeted his restaurant customers, a pleasure he enjoyed through his early 80s. Joe began most days with the newspaper crossword and cryptoquip puzzles. An avid reader, he spent much of his leisure time devouring historical novels and mysteries. He also enjoyed playing pinochle and following sports. Joseph was predeceased by his wife, Mariette in 1982; and three sisters, Marie Elizabeth (Betty), Bertha and Irene. He is survived by his sister, Estelle Dussault of Vermont; three children, Louise and her husband Paul Lesperance of Saco, Paul and his wife Michele Dussault of Saco, and Helene and her husband Mark Paulik of Michigan; as well as seven grandchildren; two great- grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank both the Monarch Center in Saco and the Maine Veteran's Home in Scarborough for the loving way they cared for Joe in his last months of life. Visiting hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 12, 2014, at Hope Memorial Chapel, 480 Elm St., Biddeford. A memorial Mass will be celebrated on Monday, Oct. 13, 2014, at 10:30 a.m., at Most Holy Trinity Church in Saco. To share condolences online, please visit www.HopeMemorial.com.
