FERNANDEZ, JON MICHAEL, 51Gainesville - Jon Michael "Mike" Fernandez, died on January 14, 2014 at the MCIU of Shands Teaching Hospital. Jon Michael was a loving brother, uncle, nephew and friend. He is survived by his sister Kimberly Sue dePaz of Fort Myers, FL; niece, Brooke Alexis Fowler of Fort Myers, FL; aunts, uncles, and cousins in Florida, Virginia, Nebraska, and Texas. He was born on March 30, 1962 in Fort Campbell, KY to SFC William Mathews Fernandez, 5th Special Forces, MACVSOG who died while serving his country during the VietNam War on February 19, 1971. Jon Michael was raised by his paternal grandfather and grandmother (George F. "Bud" Fernandez and "Miss Billie" Mathews Fernandez ). A resident of Gainesville since 1971, Jon Michael was on the varsity baseball team at Buchholz High School and graduated in 1980. He served in the United States Army from 1980 - 1982. He was an avid Florida Gator fan who could quote stats from the time he could remember. Jon Michael was a selfless individual who loved everyone. As an example, upon entering the Unit at Shands, Jon Michael was asked if he would consider a liver transplant; and in his grave condition he said "Give it to someone who really needs it." That's the kind of selfless person he was. He bravely faced his fate with the strength and unwavering bravery that is exhibited by true warriors. In lieu of a service, the family requests that you honor and celebrate Jon Michael's life privately.
