John Wingfield Marshall III February 11, 1931- February 22, 2015 Columbus, Georgia- John Wingfield Marshall III , age 84, of Columbus, passed away at home on Feb. 22, 2015. Funeral services are scheduled for Feb. 26, 2015, 2pm, at First Presbyterian Church in Columbus. A visitation will follow the service in the Johnston wing. Mr. Marshall was born in Atlanta on Feb. 11, 1931, but settled in Athens as a grade-schooler. Always an exceptional athlete, he became a three sport star at Athens High, lettering three years each in baseball, basketball, and football. Mr. Marshall went on to graduate from the University of Georgia, where he was a three year letterman in both basketball and baseball, and key part of the 1953 SEC Championship baseball team. Widely regarded as one of the premier athletes of his era, Mr. Marshall was inducted into the Athens Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004, and was a member of Georgia's Gridiron Secret Society. He attended graduate school at UGA as a Comer Fund Fellow. His life-long love of sports led him to coach many of Columbus' fine young athletes in both baseball - the Peach Little League and Pony League - and in Pop Warner football. After college, he served in the US Air Force for 5 years, discharging at the rank of Captain. Mr. Marshall then settled in Columbus to raise his family and start his business career which was culminated by 25 years as President of EJ Knight Scrap Material Company. He was a long-time Rotarian, and was recognized with both the Paul Harris and the Will Watt Fellow awards. Mr. Marshall was a member of First Presbyterian Church here in Columbus. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ann Hamilton Marshall, and his children Terri Pitcher (Gene) of Springfield TN, John Marshall (Hope) of Richmond VA , Martha Marshall (Mitch Reeves) of Atlantic Beach FL, Barbara Gunter (Huel) of Silverlake, OH and Elizabeth Vance (Tracy) of Thompson GA; a sister, Mary Wade (Ted) of Smyrna GA and 2 brothers, Pat Marshall (Fay) and Bill Marshall, all of Athens, GA. Also by 5 granddaughters - Anne Marshall, Courtney Thompson, Meg Marshall, Emily Reeves, Macy Gunter as well as 3 great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Wingfield Marshall JR and Frances Rhodes Marshall, and a brother, Hal Marshall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to First Presbyterian Church of Columbus, the Athens GA YMCA camps or the Columbus Hospice House.
