FINNEY John Wiley, 102, died February 24, 2014 after a short illness at Wesley Village in Wilmore, KY. He was born in March 1911 to caring, Christian parents. His mother lived past 89 years of age, and his father past 97, giving evidence of good genes for longevity on both sides of his family. After a normal childhood in Nashville, Wiley finished high school at 17 and entered the University of Tennessee in 1928. He left Knoxville in 1933 with a BS degree in electrical engineering and a Reserve Commission in the Army Corps of Engineers. Wiley then went to work with the Tennessee Department of Public Health as a part of the sanitary engineering department. He married his beloved wife, Hazel Jakes in 1934 while earning a grand total of $85 per month. In 1940 Wiley entered the Sanitary Corps Reserve of the US Army. In March of 1941 he reported to Fort McClellan, Alabama for what was supposed to be a year of temporary duty. But Pearl Harbor in December, 1941 intervened, and he was assigned to serve overseas with the Eighth Army Air Corps based in England. When World Was II was over, Wiley returned to his job at the Health Department. He then received a fellowship to Harvard Graduate School where he obtained a Masters Degree in Sanitary Engineering in 1948. The family eventually moved to Lexington where he went to work for the Howard K. Bell Consulting Engineering firm in 1954. He served as President of the firm from 1969 to 1979. Wiley holds membership in the Kentucky Society of Professional Engineers, National Society of Professional Engineers, Kentucky-Tennessee Water Pollution Control Association and the Consulting Engineers Council of Kentucky where he was Vice-President 1971-72 and President from 1972-73. He was president of the National American Consulting Engineers Council form 1978-81. He is a member of Delta Omega, honorary public health society and a Diplomate of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers. He is an American Water Works Association Life Member and held all offices in the association including Director of the National Association. In addition to the George Fuller award in 1952, he received the AWWA Gold Water Drop Award in 1996, the KyTn AWWA Outstanding Service Award in 1980, and, is a member of the KyTn Section Hall of Fame. He is the recipient of three awards from the KY TN Water Environmental Association: the Sanitary Sludge Shovelers Award in 1979, the Arthur Sydney Bedell Award in 1983, and the S. Leary Jones Award in 1991. He was awarded the Hero, Saints and Legends designation by Wesley Village in 2003 for a lifetime of service to others. He is an active member of the Kiwanis Club and a Charter Member and leader of Southern Hills United Methodist Church. Though living in Lexington since 1954 with a strong interest in UK sports teams, he continued to favor UT until his death. Mr. Finney says, "My career has been satisfying to me and my life has been enriched by the love of a supportive wife for nearly 54 years and by two children who are successful in their chosen careers." His parents, his wife Hazel Finney and his brother Charles and sister Elizabeth preceded him in death. He is survived by son Dean C. Finney of Kingsport, TN, daughter Harriet (Norman) Schulz of Lexington KY, grandchildren Keith Finney and Leigh Ann (Steve) Laube of Kingsport and Jennifer (Robert) Axmacher of Erie, Colorado, and great-grandchildren M.
