John Willis Whaley, 76, of 2711 State Park Road, widower of Pearl A. Jewell Whaley, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, at his residence. Born in Greenville County, he was the son of the late Floyd Gambell and Freddie Beulah Davis Whaley. Mr. Whaley was retired from John D. Hollingsworth, and was a member of New Hope Baptist Church, Marietta. He was also a U.S. Army veteran, having served during the Korean War and World War II. Surviving are a daughter, Pat Wright of Greenville; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and four brothers, Claude, Ralph, Frank, and Gilbert Whaley. He was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Sullivan; and a son, Johnny Whaley. Memorials may be made to New Hope Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 397, Marietta, SC 29661. Visitation will be held tonight, Jan. 7, 2005, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at 1:30 p.m. in the chapel. Burial will follow in Graceland Cemetery, West.
