LUDLOW - John Wesley "Jack" Tope III, M.D., 87, died at Cedar Hill Nursing Home in Windsor on August 14, 2009.Jack was born in Oak Park, Ill., on July 25, 1922, the son of John W. Jr. and Louise (Hague) Tope.He attended Oak Park and River Forest Township High School. He graduated from Dartmouth College and Dartmouth Medical School in 1944 and completed his medical training at Northwestern Medical School receiving his M.D. in 1946. He did his internship at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Ill. Jack entered the U.S. Navy in 1947 and attended the School of Aviation Medicine in Pensacola, Fla., receiving his designation of flight surgeon. His residency was in general surgery at Cook County Hospital in Illinois from 1949 to 1953. Jack married Kathryn Jacobs, a Navy nurse, in Yokosuka, Japan, in 1948. They were married 38 years until her death in 1986.He practiced as general surgeon for 39 years in Oak Park, Ill., in the hospital that had been founded by his grandfather. He served as chief of staff and chief of surgery there for many years. He also served as an associate and attending surgeon at Cook County Hospital in the breast tumor clinic for 15 years. Jack retired in 1991, moving to Ludlow where he had owned a vacation home for 20 years. He married Mary Davis of Ludlow in 1992.Jack enjoyed the proximity to Hanover in his last years where he enjoyed the companionship of fellow "'44" classmates at monthly luncheons in Norwich.He is survived by his four daughters, Mary Rita Batesole of Ludlow, Kathleen Stiffler of Westford, Mass., Linda Tope of Siesta Key, Fla., and Elizabeth Crowley of Villa Park, Ill. He has two grandchildren, Kathryn Stiffler of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Christopher Stiffler of Burlington, Vt.; also a sister, Shirley Shearman of Steamboat Springs, Colo.; and several nieces and nephews.A memorial Mass will be celebrated at the Church of the Annunciation in Ludlow on Friday, August 21, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. There will be no calling hours. Burial will be at a later date in Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside, Ill.Adams & Kenney Funeral Home in Ludlow has been entrusted with the arrangements.
