John-W. Eriksson, born in 1921, spouse of Edith I. L, son of Gunnar and Anna-Tilling, father of Dale Ann, Ark, Janice Eriksson, Florida and James Allen, died on October 18, 2010 at 89 years old.
ERIKSSON John W. Eriksson, age 89, of Yellville, Ark., passed away Monday, October 18, 2010 at Pine Lane Living Center in Mountain Home. He was born March 14, 1921 in Varmland, Sweden to Gunnar and Anna Tilling Eriksson and came to the US in 1923. He served six years of active duty, serving as a platoon sergeant in the Marine Corps during World War II. He participated in five battles: Pearl Harbor, Roi-Namor and Marshall Islands, Saipan, Tinian, where he earned a Purple Heart; and Iwo Jima where in lieu of a second Purple Heart he was given a Purple Eagle. He received two Presidential Citations: the Bronze Star, Saipan and a Gold Star, Iwo Jima. In his first tour of duty he served in 3rd Defense and 1st Defense Units. In his second tour of duty he served in M Company, 25th Regiment, 4th Marine Division heavy weapons company. He was a retired supervisor at Florida Atlantic University. He was a member of the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, Marine Corps League, Veterans of Foreign Wars, a Pearl Harbor survivor. Mr. Eriksson moved to the area in 2005, coming here from Gulfport, Mississippi. He is survived by two daughters: Dale Ann Eriksson of Yellville, Ark.; and Janice Eriksson O'Brien of The Village, Florida; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith I.L. Eriksson; a son: James Allen Eriksson; two brothers: Erik Eriksson and Elmer Eriksson; and two great-grandchildren: Andrew Bourg, and Timothy Bourg. Visitation will be 10 a.m. Saturday, October 23, 2010, at Burns Funeral Home in Yellville, AR with the funeral service to be held at 11 a.m. with Rev. Paula Kuether officiating. Military Honors will be provided by the United States Marine Corps.
